Abstract

Situated in Hong Kong’s substantially constrained discourse on sexuality, this paper aims to look at how introducing the topic of masturbation into our college’s gender-and sexuality-linked class designed pedagogical conundrums (in the text of Kathleen Quinlivan). We talk about how tries to confront these conundrums enabled us to start the journey of knowing and breakthe silence about acquiring sexual want talked over in the classroom and created assignments. Drawing on our previously classroom discussion of sexual topics, which resulted in moments of silence, and the created assignments of 10 pupils on the matter of masturbation, this paper borrows Quinlivan’s discussion of the prospects in ‘uncomfortable analytic reflexivity’ to check out how training can be a very contested house carved out by pupils to categorical, equally ‘silently’ and ‘openly’, their perceptions of masturbation. School rooms can be flipped to find the cracks that allow the journey to breaking the silence to get started and to present area for students to focus on sexual wishes and pleasures that have been beforehand deemed unfavorable and unspeakable in their prior classroom knowledge. Remembering and reflecting on such silence can allow it to be reconceptualised as illuminating and meaningful.
