What is an Industrial Reactor?

A reactor can be used for chemical reactions, such as those in kilns that produce lime. The chemicals are placed in the reactor and mixed, often heated, to allow for the reaction to take place.

What is a Reactor?

A nuclear reactor is a system that initiates, controls and regulates a self-sustaining chain reaction of fission, generating electricity. The process begins with heavy atoms, called fuel, which absorb neutrons and split. This releases large amounts of energy, mostly in the form of heat. This heat is carried away by coolant, most often just plain water, and sent to a turbine that spins an electric generator or drive shaft.

The most common type of reactor is the pressurized water reactor (PWR). This design represents around 80% of current nuclear power plants. The PWR consists of a pressure vessel that contains the reactor core, control rods and moderator. It also includes a steam generator that heats a secondary loop of non-radioactive water to make steam that can turn a turbine and produce electricity.

The core is surrounded by a moderator which slows the neutrons. This helps to keep the chain reaction from happening too quickly, known as a critical mass state. Keeping the reactor at this point allows human operators or mechanical devices to intervene and control it in real time. This prevents an exponential power surge that could melt down the reactor and destroy the plant. Delay neutrons are produced by the chain reaction and help to achieve this critical mass.

The two most common types of reactors are batch and continuous. Batch reactions are the kind that you will most likely encounter in the laboratory where a mixture of reactants is added to a tube, flask or beaker and then heated for the reaction to take place. Once the reaction is complete the mixture is poured out and the reactor is cleaned ready for the next batch of reactants to be added.

Continuous reactors are used in industries where the production process is geared towards making a particular product in a continuous manner rather than in a series of batches. For example, many pharmaceutical companies are transitioning from batch lines to continuous manufacturing as this allows them to produce the drug in a more efficient manner with lower costs and shorter lead times. The continuous process produces a more consistent product that is easier to control as the residence time, temperature and pressure of the reaction can be maintained with precision.

Industrial Reactors

Industrial reactors are used in the chemical industry to carry out various chemical reactions. The design of a chemical reactor involves multiple aspects and aims at maximizing net present value for the reaction by ensuring maximum yield. Reactors can be categorized as batch, continuous or fed-batch based on how they operate and process inputs and outputs.

Batch process buy reactors are the simplest type of industrial reactor. They are closed tanks into which chemicals are poured and allowed to react over time to produce the desired product. The reaction is then stopped, the contents emptied and the reactor cleaned and refilled so that the chemical process can be repeated.

Continuous process chemical reactors are a more complex piece of equipment and can be classified as either continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) or tubular continuous flow reactors. In CSTR, the reactor consists of a closed tank with an agitator that is used to mix the reactants. The reactants are fed into the reactor at a set rate, they are allowed to react for some amount of time dictated by the size of the reaction vessel and then products flow out of the reactor at a fixed rate.

Tubular industrial reactors are similar to CSTR but have a flat bottom and have baffles that aid in the mixing of the liquid or gas phase reactants. They can be either continuous or fed-batch and have a more consistent quality of reaction than CSTR.
