What may gay anal sex instruct sexuality education and learning? Reading through the penetrated male in Witi Ihimaera’s The Uncle’s Tale: Sex Instruction: Vol , No

Abstract

When sexuality educators bother to assume about homosexual anal sexual intercourse, it is generally to contemplate, ‘What can we – or ought to we – instruct about it?’ Not often is the problem requested, ‘What may homosexual anal sex teach sexuality education?’ Impressed by Kathleen Quinlivan’s suggestion that we perform alongside one another to ‘create new choices for what else sexuality and relationships training could become’, this paper explores the educative likely of the anally penetrated male. By participating with the work of the Indigenous philosopher of training Carl Mika, whilst attending to a scene of gay anal intercourse in Witi Ihimaera’s novel The Uncle’s Tale (2000), it seeks to expose notions of wellbeing – typically conceptualised within just sexuality and relationships education in Aotearoa New Zealand as hauora – to the destabilising metaphysical entities of darkness and nothingness, thereby opening sexuality education up to what Mika calls the ‘(il)logic of mystery’.
